Ms Jones, Mrs Collins and Ms Beatty took the girls to see the work of Beryl Bainbridge and Sixe Parades at Somerset House. This was a great opportunity to go into the space underneath the courtyard where Sixe Parades had displayed his vibrant wall-hangings and knitted sculptures. The girls enjoyed the slightly creepy atmosphere, walking through the dark tunnels where the walls were lined with grave stones. This contrasted with Parades contemporary style. Bainbridge’s paintings were displayed with extracts from her novels so it was easy to see the narrative content in her work. Her use of paint was lively and combined with collage to create captivating pieces. Afterwards, some of the girls let off steam by running through the fountains in the courtyard, they skilfully managed to avoid getting soaked to the skin. The sun came out so we could eat our lunch in the park before returning to school.
