Last week, Year 8 visited Hampton Court Palace to follow up the work they have covered in their History lessons this year on the Tudors and Stuarts. The weather forecast said that you would have to be unlucky to catch a shower, and we were unlucky. When we arrived, it was a bit wet and cold but we were largely inside, using an audioguide to take us through the Kitchens, Henry VIII’s Apartments, the Chapel and the apartments of William and Mary.
We met several actors in costume, who gave us some interesting background on the people who had lived in the palace.
By lunchtime, the sun had come out and we had a picnic on the grass. Then, it was time for the Education Department’s teaching session on ‘Elizabeth: Power and Politics’ which was led by an actor also in costume. The girls enthusiastically took part in the group activity about who should be Elizabeth’s heir and showed how much they had learned from Mr Carlylse in the session about Elizabeth’s relationship with Robert Dudley.
It was then time to get back on to the coach and return to school – not much later than usual.
