Last Friday was an eventful day for More House. We began with our Start of year Mass at the Church of Our Most Holy Redeemer and Saint Thomas More, which was followed by our annual Sports Day in Battersea Park.
The luck was clearly on our side for the first major sporting event of the year; Sports Day. The day was filled with fierce competition, all girls in each House worked together in their attempt to become Sports Day Champions. The big question everyone was asking; who would take Iona’s crown?
There were some outstanding performances throughout the day from girls in Year 7 – 13. Many school records were broken (and in some cases, totally obliterated) which highlights the effort and determination of those who took part. Some notable performers were: Hope Healy in Year 7 who won the Junior 300m, 400m and 800m; Jayvana Peace who jumped a whopping 1.48m to win the Junior High Jump; Grace Meekin who dominated the Junior Discus with a huge 21.20m throw and Maud Bridel who threw 8.44m to take the title. In the Middies section, Lucy Aylmer jumped 3.80m to take the Long Jump title and Nancy Sarif ran an outstanding race to take the 300m title. In the Senior section Abigail Oladapo treated us to a sprinting masterclass in the 100m Final and Biba Thomas excelled in the endurance races, winning both the 800 and 1500m finals.
The end of the day saw the House relays; with all to play for, teamwork and speed were crucial. Canterbury dominated the relays but unfortunately this wasn’t enough to take them into the lead, so it was, again, Iona House who were crowned champions.
The end of the day saw infamous staff relay which provided a spot of light entertainment for the watching crowds. Who would’ve thought Mr Bignell would be so speedy!
Huge congratulations to all girls, I look forward to the next Inter House Sporting Event already.
