Views from our Study – Informal Concert

Apologies for the delay in sharing last week’s newsletter – here is Views from our Study, week commencing 05/02/18:

It has been another busy week and we cannot believe it is half term already.

Art History Conference

Last Saturday, a group of art historians from the sixth form went to Ascot with Mrs Hunt for a conference at Heathfield School. The speakers came from Sussex, Leads, and East Anglia universities, and the focus was on the impact of war and conflict in art and representation since 1800.

Some really interesting talks were given – on Jeremy Deller’s ‘Orgreave’ video pieces on the re-enactment of the miners’ strike, his Baghdad car ‘It is what it is’ piece that can be seen in the Imperial War Museum, and his conceptual work on responses to World War I ‘We’re here because we’re here’. We learned about Liebeskind’s ‘IWM North’, a de-constructivist architectural work for a living museum, which creates a sense of the chaos of the blitz in its disorientating architectural spaces. The talks on Canova’s ‘Napoleon as Mars’ and the German expressionists Dix and Kirchner gave us a flavour of war artists from ‘the other side’ and enabled us to consider the notion of perspective and morality. Finally, we discovered El Salahi’s work on conflict in the Sudan and considered non-Western attitudes and representation of colonial and post-colonial oppression and revolution.

The conference was fascinating and supported both the legacy and new specification A level in history of art.

Informal Concert

A massive well done to all the girls who performed in the informal concert on Tuesday. It is always such a pleasurable way to spend an evening, listening to our talented students singing and playing their instruments. We are incredibly lucky to have so much talent across all year groups. Thank you especially to Raya, Manaal, Steele, and Ella for sharing their performances with us all in assembly too!

LAMDA Success

The LAMDA group produced some great performances of monologues and duologues on Wednesday evening. Congratulations on all your hard work!

Trip to Salzburg

As we write this newsletter, Miss Brown is with a group of students in Salzburg where they have been attending school and practicing their German. Due to the snowy spells and the “no outdoor shoes inside” policy, they were asked to pack their slippers to wear to lessons – how comfy does that sound!

House Countdown Winner

Congratulations to Santiago who won House Countdown this week!

Sport Report

The U12/U13 hockey team played a friendly practice game against Francis Holland. There was some excellent play from Issy L., Ella-Bea, and Phoebe S. We look forward to more training and matches after half term!

The senior girls were also busy this week, filming their GCSE netball match against Queen’s Gate yesterday. It was great to see the girls implementing their skills in the match play and we hope for some good results in the summer.

MHPA Quiz Night

Finally, a reminder about the upcoming MHPA quiz night – don’t forget to ask for tickets from your form rep. See you there!

MHPA Quiz Night

We hope you have a restful break with family and friends.
