Firstly – huge congratulations to the U16A netball team who have won the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Netball League. Their final match saw them defeat Queen’s Gate 9-5. Lizzie A was awarded player of the match. Special mention also goes to Vicky F who worked extremely hard in WD to minimise her WA involvement. Also to Eya and Hope who made countless turnovers in defence!
In other fixtures this week, the All Stars netball team won 3-1 against St Thomas More, with Issy M awarded player of the match. Sadly, they lost 13-1 against Holland Park. Maya A took player of the match. The U13/14 team won their match against Fairley House, final score was 6-5 with Lucy J crowned player of the match.
The U13/U14 football team got off to an excellent start this week, winning 6-0 against Queen’s College on Monday! Hana S scored a hat trick, with two goals from Amalia B and one goal from Mia H. In their second match against Francis Holland Sloane Square on Tuesday, the U13 football team sadly lost 2-0, but it was an even, well-played game throughout.
Meanwhile, the rowing team braved the cold in a fixture on January 18th at Fulham Reach Boat Club against Sacred Heart School. Sadly, they narrowly lost both matches – one by 1 foot and one by ½ a boat length.
Sixth-Form Trip for MFL Girls
The girls were given a 2-hour, university-style workshop in French by Dr Emily Saline of the University of Greenwich. The theme was the evolution of French cinema, with a focus on the New Wave movement (La Nouvelle Vague). We were then shown how this movement still influences film today, in particular the film we are studying, La Haine.
La Haine deals with tension amongst immigrant populations in the banlieues of Paris. After lunch on the South Bank, we were given a special screening of Entre les murs, another film that explores life in the banlieues and the complexities of identity in urban France. The girls were able to practice their analytical skills, listening skills, and speaking skills, which will hopefully be valuable as the A levels approach!
Themed Week: Around the World
We would like to say a big thank you to the MFL, Geography, and Classics Departments for organizing such a wonderful week of activities for the girls. There was a wide range of clubs and activities on offer – something for everyone!
A number of pupils helped run the clubs this week. Special mention to Judy A who led Arabic club on Monday, Sara M who made a handout and gave a taster session in Japanese on Tuesday, Alina K for her Russian lesson on Wednesday, and Emma S and Vicky H who taught Mandarin on Thursday to a group of year 10 and 11 girls. All of the lessons were a great success and we were extremely impressed with their preparation and delivery!
Other clubs: Niamh, Emma, and Laura led a fantastic Irish dancing session and Julia B helped year 7 girls make cranes in origami club. Miss Wijay held a popular Bollywood dance session with year 10, and Mr Henvey introduced year 10 to the world of percussion on Monday. Mrs Mercer had the girls embrace their inner zen with a session of Tai Chi.

This week, we were raising money for WE charity. So far, £500 has been raised through the international Mufti day and the Rafiki bracelets sold.
WE organisation believes in shifting “the world from ‘me’ to ‘we’—through how we act, how we give, the choices we make on what to buy and what to wear, the media we consume and the experiences with which we choose to engage.”
The girls watched this video in assembly to learn more about the charity.
Last week, the GCSE drama students welcomed award-winning theatre practitioners, Frantic Assembly, to school. “Frantic Assembly has always been about more than the work on the stage. It is about the ethos of collaboration, of empowerment, of that constant desire to improve. It is about telling stories in a voice we don’t always hear and about finding talent in places we don’t always look.”
Frantic Assembly delivered an interactive and thoroughly engaging two-hour workshop that challenged all learners to think beyond the conventional and experiment with abstract movement. They broke down the stages of choreography and storytelling into small, accessible building blocks, which when assembled created awe-inspiring theatre.
The experience was immensely enriching, with one student commenting: “It was so helpful to learn the foundations to building Frantic Assembly inspired movement. I am now so excited about working on our devised piece!”
Sixth Form in Paris
Sadly, the French do not allow their greatest works to leave France… Happily for us, though, we were able to experience some of the most influential art of the Western world in the flesh. Our A-level art historians and artists were able to deepen their understanding of 19th and 20th-century art, sculptures, and architecture, dating from the French Revolution to Post Modernism.
Here’s what some of the girls had to say about the trip:
“The Musée d’Orsay held all the key 19th-century French works we are currently studying. It was amazing to see the re-functioned train station as home to the works of the industrial revolution. Courbet was so well-located and so impressive.”
“It was brilliant to see the works we have studied in such detail and in real life on canvas – and not in a book. The scale was monumental and the colours were so vivid – it made understanding the works so much more accessible.”
“The Water Lilies at the Orangerie and again at the Marmottan showed a development of styles and ideas on a theme that was breathtaking in its scale.”
We have a LAMDA showing on February 13th at 5:00 PM in the drama studio! Everyone is encouraged to attend.
