10/05/19 – Goodbye, Chicks!

In the Catholic Church, May is known as the Month of Mary. To mark the start of this month of celebration, Phoenix sang Schubert’s well-known setting of Ave Maria during assembly for us!

German Exchange Trip

In February, German GCSE pupils attended school in Lörrach and last week, pupils from the Hebel Gymnasium returned the visit to More House.

The German students joined a variety of year 9 and 10 lessons – they even learned how to play rounders! After school, Ms Brown hosted a tea party for the students and Senior Chamber Choir performed some of their favourite pieces for our guests. Thank you to the choir for their delightful performance and thank you to the parents who attended and supported our welcome party behind the scenes!

On Wednesday, the visitors attended more lessons. The highlight came after school, though, when More House girls showed the German pupils around King’s Road before taking them to see The Lion King.

On Thursday, the pupils enjoyed history, science, and English lessons, as well as their first ever PSHE session. After school, they flexed their newly-discovered rounders skills – the girls certainly gave the German boys a run for their money! The exchange trip rounded off with a farewell pizza and movie night.

Thank you to all the teachers who hosted the pupils and thank you also to all the More House parents and pupils who supported the exchange! The Hebel Gymnasium really enjoyed their time with us and hope to visit again soon.

Parent & Pupil Talks

Kyoto from ProTech kids came to give a parent talk on Wednesday evening on social media. She discussed WhatsApp, Instagram, and Snapchat and explained the different functionalities as well as settings that can be used to ensure safe social media usage. Kyoto will be sending through the slides and notes from the presentation, which Ms Brown will forward to parents!

This afternoon, Charlotte Robertson from Digital Awareness UK talked to pupils in years 7-10 about digital wellbeing, inappropriate sharing online, and screen strategy. Thank you so much for sharing your tips with the girls, Charlotte!

Living Eggs

After a two-week stay with us, today we said goodbye to all ten of our lovely chicks from Living Eggs. We were so thrilled to have all ten eggs hatch again this year! They provided some delightful pet therapy sessions for both pupils and staff while they were with us.

We wish them all the best in their new homes with various pupils!

Easter Choral Concert

More House held its annual Easter Choral Concert at Holy Trinity Church just before the spring break. During the first half, our Senior Chamber Choir sang some complex, polyphonic, early music by Monteverdi and then some beautiful Vivaldi complete with an instrumental chamber group. The beautiful musical of Ola Gjelo was then wonderfully executed by the Junior Chamber Choir, reflecting the captivating and mystifying auroro borealis or as we know them, the Northern lights.

During the second half, we enjoyed an impressive full-scale production of Chilcott’s Five Days that Changed the World, complete with double choir and an upper voice choir accompanied by timpani and piano. These five movements: 1455: The Invention of Printing; 1834: The Abolition of Slavery; 1903: The First Powered Flight; 1928: The Discovery of Penicillin; 1961: The First Man in Space were wonderfully varied in mood, tonal colour, and showed brilliantly controlled technique. The ensemble was fantastic and Miss Radzvilaite’s brilliant piano skills were a real treat to both observe and listen to!

The girls and staff had clearly put in many hours of rehearsals, which delivered a polished and tonally varied performance. All that hard work definitely paid off on the night – we were treated to such a polished and poised performance, one that both the girls and their parents will remember for years to come!

Sixth-Form Workshop

On May 1st, year 12 spent time in a skills workshop learning to create promotional videos for business or charity on their phones. The girls engaged in a half-day project entitled “How to create your own promo video on your phone and how to upload it”.

The purpose of the workshop was to enable them to use social media for social good and build core competencies for their CVs and personal statements, which they will begin writing over the summer as they prepare to apply for university, work, or other further-education courses. The workshop was also designed to support work experience opportunities for those who wish to work in media, marketing, business, or charity sectors.

The session was led by Sharon Gaffney of Verde Business Solutions, who has an impressive CV working in enterprise and charitable frontline consultancy and education. The girls really enjoyed the workshop and learned to develop skills they are learning in business studies, drama, and PSHE. They devised practice videos in the workshop.

“It was a really great experience – I enjoyed working in a team to create our practice video. We had a lot of fun and it will be really good once it is edited!”

“Our workshop video was great! We managed it in one take. Although it needs a little polish, we were really pleased with the outcome. We have used i-maker before, so we can edit out any errors.”

Race For Life

It’s an important date in the summer term calendar – Cancer Research UK’s Race For Life in Battersea Park! We need as many donations as possible to this important cause. We raised over £3,000 last year – can we beat that this year? You can donate on our group page here.

And just a reminder that it’s not too late to register for Race For Life, if you’d like to take part! It will take place on Wednesday 5th June at 7:30pm. This year’s race is open to men as well, so we hope to see lots of dads out there on the day. Once registered, please join our team here and get fundraising!

Good Luck!

Finally, a big good luck to all our year 11 pupils who begin their GCSE exams next week. We wish them all the best!
